Celebrate Robert Burns Night with a Bridie Pasty

We like to celebrate all things British at Union Jacks Pasty Shack and as we approach Robert Burns Night on January 25, I wanted to share with you a Scottish dish that is often served in honor of the national poet.

Bridie pasties are made of beef and onions, wrapped in pastry dough and baked. They are hearty and flavorful, and the perfect comfort food for a cold winter evening. If you're looking for something a little different to celebrate Robert Burns Night this year, be sure to give these Bridie pasties a try - available only in person at Union Jacks Pasty Shack from Tuesday January 17th 2022. But who is Robert Burns I hear you ask?

Robert Burns is considered one of the most iconic Scottish poets of all time. His poetry is often reflective of his homeland and its people, as well as his own personal experiences. Although he is best known for his poetry, Burns was also an accomplished musician and singer. In fact, many of his poems were set to music and sung by him during live performances. If you're looking for a way to experience some of Scotland's history and culture, consider reading some of Robert Burns' poetry. You won't be disappointed, here's one of our favorites.

‘A Red, Red Rose’.

O my Luve is like a red, red rose

That’s newly sprung in June;

O my Luve is like the melody

That’s sweetly played in tune.

So fair art thou, my bonnie lass,

So deep in luve am I;

And I will luve thee still, my dear,

Till a’ the seas gang dry.

Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,

And the rocks melt wi’ the sun;

I will love thee still, my dear,

While the sands o’ life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only luve!

And fare thee weel awhile!

And I will come again, my luve,

Though it were ten thousand mile.

Possibly based on a traditional lyric, this poem – also called ‘My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose’ – is one of the most widely anthologized love poems in English. Bob Dylan called it his single biggest inspiration. And did the final two lines inspire The Proclaimers to write ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)’? One cannot choose but wonder.
